A CHILD LITERACY INITIATIVE FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

  The Reading By 9 vision
  is that 95% of all
  children in Southern California
  will read
  in English at grade
  level by age nine

 

In the 1999 Holiday Book Drive over 60 Rotary Clubs in the five Rotary Districts in the Los Angeles area joined the Reading by 9 team, which delivered over 250,000 books to the schools. The 2000 Holiday Book Drive, with over 100 Rotary Clubs in those Districts participating, provided over 560,000 books.

How can your club  help ? 

Contact your Club's Vocational Service Director to volunteer. Generate ideas on a method to raise funds for a book purchase.

Investigate means to multiply your funds, eg. a matching challenge or local foundations.

Peruse the charts published recently in the paper listing and comparing the Reading Test Scores of all the schools in your school district and target one.

Establish contact with the school principal and determine a plan beyond buying books, eg. a recruiting drive for mentors to work with students.
